The Turtles vs. The Mothers
When Frank Zappa was pushed off a stage in London, The Mothers – with new vocalists Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (a.k.a. Flo & Eddie) – we’re suddenly without a job. Signing with Reprise, Flo & Eddie brought along a few ex-Mothers (which included some ex-Turtles) to record their 1972 debut, The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie, and this 1973 follow-up, Flo & Eddie – a perfect extension of Mark & Howie’s Turtles’ pop melodies goosed by Zappa’s anything goes attitude (plus a few cool covers, too). It probably should have been a Turtles album, but Mark & Howie weren’t even legally allowed to use their own, Christian names around this time. Hence the moniker. Produced by Bob Ezrin.
